Emergency repairs are continuing on the A1 after a sinkhole opened up in the North East.

The road is open one lane northbound and two lanes southbound while work progresses to fix the six-and-a-half metre wide crater which appeared on Saturday night under the northbound carriageway.

Northumbria Police said: "We are continuing to remind motorists to plan their journey and allow extra time. Please take care."

The hole, which is being filled with a specialist concrete mixture before the road is resurfaced, is believed to be related to old mine workings in the area.

It was discovered when a slight dip in the road surface became apparent.
