Steve Bruce is sweating on the fitness of Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles for Burnley’s visit to St James’s Park.

Lascelles missed the midweek Carabao Cup win over Newport County with a hamstring problem.

And Lascelles and defensive colleague Emil Krafth are doubtful for tonight’s televised game against Burnley, though Bruce hopes to have winger Allan Saint-Maximin back from an ankle problem.

“Lascelles has got a bit of a hamstring, so that's why he wasn't involved the other night,” said Bruce. “Emil's got a hip problem, so defensively it's leaving us a bit short with (Paul) Dummett and (Ciaran) Clark (already sidelined). However, we've got Fab Schar back, so it's a big, important time. We've played seven games in 21 days.

“We hope that we have all of them ready for a week on Monday, shall we say – that goes for (Matty) Longstaff, Dummett, Clark, and of course (Matt) Ritchie has had his operation, which will keep him out for the next few weeks.”
