Newcastle United in talks over winger transfer after 'deal agreed' & £68m boost

The 30-year-old will play his final Copa America group stage match on Tuesday evening for Paraguay, who became the first side to be eliminated from the competition after losing their opening two group matches to Colombia and Brazil.

Newcastle are actively looking to strengthen the right-wing position this summer and would consider selling Almiron as a result. The Gazette understands The Magpies had a deal agreed for Almiron to make the move to a Saudi Pro League club back in January but the player wanted to remain at St James’ Park instead.

After Newcastle narrowly avoided PSR punishment by selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively for a combined figure of £68million, further sales are still expected.

And Almiron’s future remains uncertain with a Saudi Pro League move still on the cards. According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are in talks with a Saudi Pro League club over the sale of Almiron as they look to cash in on the Paraguayan.

Newcastle bought Almiron from Atlanta United in 2019 for a reported fee of £21million and he has since gone on to score 30 goals in 209 appearances for the club.

Despite the clear ongoing interest from Saudi Arabia and Newcastle’s willingness to sell, Almiron remains settled at St James’ Park and continues to speak highly of the club.

Ahead of the Copa America, Almiron told reporters (translated from Spanish): “When we play [at St James’ Park], it feels like playing in your own backyard. The city is like that too. They are very friendly people.

“I saw that from the beginning. When I arrived we had tough times but still people came and asked for autographs and supported you. I had never experienced that until I came here [to Newcastle United]. Now we have the Copa America, which for me is going to be very important.

“As I always say, I am very grateful to the [Newcastle United] fans for the affection they showed me from the beginning. I feel blessed.”
