Sunderland fought off Premier League interest to sign Chris Rigg up to his first professional contract.

The 17-year-old attracted interest from the likes of Newcastle United, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund after becoming a regular in Sunderland’s first-team during the 2023-24 season. Rigg made his debut for Sunderland as a 15-year-old has now made 25 first-team appearances, scoring three goals.

But he was unable to sign a professional contract at the Stadium of Light until after his 17th birthday last month, leaving Sunderland vulnerable to losing one of their top young stars.

Rigg has agreed a three-year professional contract at Sunderland ahead of the 2024-25 Championship season. It’s a double boost for The Black Cats who have not only tied Rigg down until 2027 but they can also demand a transfer fee should any club look to sign him.

After his deal was confirmed, Rigg said: “I am absolutely buzzing, to be honest.

“It is a proud moment for myself and my family to be signing my first professional contract at a club like Sunderland. I have been dying to sign it for almost a year now.

“I want to develop as a player and improve as a person – and I believe this is the best place for me to do that. All the staff have been unbelievable with me throughout my journey at the Academy of Light, but there are still so many improvements I can make.

“The hard work starts now, but I am looking forward to making many more memories representing this club.”
